Biography
The vocal ensemble ‘LauschWerk’ consists mainly of active and former members of the Audi Young Persons’ Choral Academy who have decided to pursue a professional singing career. Under the direction of Prof. Martin Steidler, the ensemble, which is made up of different numbers of singers depending on the programme, performs challenging vocal music from the Renaissance to the modern era.
The vocal ensemble's work focuses on promoting vocal and artistic skills and aims to provide impetus for further development as a soloist. At the invitation of the Bavarian State Opera, the ensemble took part in the opera production Semele at the Munich Opera Festival 2023. As part of the Herrenchiemsee Festival 2023, the ensemble presented works from the so-called Chigi Codex. In the Audi Summer Concerts 2024's own production of Purcell's “The Fairy Queen”, the ensemble took on the chorus part and all solos. Most recently, LauschWerk performed at the 1st Philharmonic Concert of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra in September 2024 in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
Martin Steidler
Artistic Director
Realising and communicating masterpieces of music history and contemporary repertoire in the highest possible quality - this guiding principle characterises Martin Steidler's work as a choirmaster, conductor and professor of choral conducting at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich. He led the university's Madrigal Choir to first prize at the German Choir Competition in 2014 and to victory in the ‘adult choirs’ category at the ‘Let the Peoples Sing’ competition in 2015. Steidler himself has been honoured many times, including with the Bavarian Culture Prize. As the founder and director of the Audi Youth Choir Academy, the Heinrich Schütz Ensemble Vornbach and the ensemble LauschWerk, Martin Steidler is active across the entire spectrum of choral music, from youth choirs to professional ensembles.
Martin Steidler's work is characterised by the highest standards of fidelity to the original and has shaped his artistic path since his time as a music teacher at the Auersperg-Gymnasium in Passau. His profound interest in historical performance practice began during his studies of piano and choral conducting at the universities of Vienna and Regensburg. He received significant inspiration from conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Claudio Abbado, as a singer in the Arnold Schoenberg Choir conducted by Erwin Ortner, from his choral conducting teachers Johannes Prinz, Herwig Reiter and Kunibert Schäfer and in masterclasses with Frieder Bernius, Gary Graden and Volker Hempfling.
Another focus of his repertoire is contemporary music - Martin Steidler has rehearsed and conducted a series of world premieres by Sean Sepherd, Jörg Widmann, Sami Moussa and young composers, among others. His ensembles now perform at venues such as the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Martin Steidler links his ensembles with orchestras on the international music scene such as the Hamburg State Orchestra, the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the orchestras Les Siècles and Le Cercle de L'Harmonie. As a conductor, he regularly works with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the L'arpa festante orchestra and the Georgian Chamber Orchestra. Martin Steidler has conducted the choir of the Tyrolean Festival, trained the Bavarian Radio Choir and prepared choirs for conductors such as Kent Nagano, Axel Kober, Ulf Schirmer, Marie Jacquot and Thomas Guggeis. He is also a sought-after lecturer and juror at international workshops and competitions.
Martin Steidler's work is also characterised by international exchange projects and the development of new concert formats. With the choral festivals of the Heinrich Schütz Ensemble and the Voc:Vocal concert series, he has opened up cross-genre spaces in the spectrum from a cappella and choral symphonic music to drama, puppet theatre, chanson and literature.
Choral music requires both tonal and human teamwork, which is why Martin Steidler focuses on professional vocal training, precise speech and intonation work and clear penetration of the inner essence and emotions of the works - as well as on building an appreciative community. The interaction of both aspects forms the basis for his ensembles' status in cultural life.
